The new Oldenburg Vineyards Cellar Door has been designed by architect Simon Beerstecher, the architect behind the restoration of Rustenburg as well as Glen Carlou. The interior design is by Kelly Hoppen, originally from Cape Town now based in London.

The original brief was to build a building that allows the stunning views of Oldenburg’s vineyards, juxtaposed against the backdrop of the Stellenbosch Mountains, to be completely visible whilst one is inside the building. The building has been designed with elements of Cape architecture, but represented with a more contemporary feel. The roof is thatch as this provides both the feel of Africa and the traditional Cape Dutch finish. The building is designed to be sympathetic to its surroundings, the use of thatch, local stone façade and colouring have been chosen with this in mind. The interior has an open airy feel, with the tasting room in its centre. An upstairs ‘loft’ provides the office space for the business. A comfortable living room is off the tasting room. A basement houses a VIP vinoteque and various bottle aging storage areas.

The interior design brief was to create an interior that was comfortable, almost homely, but simple and elegant. Importantly all the furnishing were to be sourced locally, using the many talents of South African artisans. The interior has been designed to be complementary to the building, and its surroundings, allowing the main focus to be the exterior views. The floors are a mixture of limestone and wenge, a naturally dark wood, they provide a simple but strong finish. The bar is a black lacquered recycled oak. The tables in the centre of the vinoteque and tasting room are made from single pieces of recycled Bubinga-at over 4 metres in length they weigh approximately 1000kg each.
