Wine Club 2nd quarter offering

The harvest is now officially over, and our winemaker Philip Costandius is happy to report that all the pre-harvest optimism has fulfilled its promise that the 2015 vintage will be one of the best ever - we can't wait to taste the results!

A few days ago we had a tasting here on the farm to compare the progression of the red wines from 2012 vs 2013, and what we discovered was that the 2012 Syrah is an absolute gem! Syrah is one of my favourite cultivars, and I adore the flavour and aromatic profile of ours. Here are the tasting notes as provided by Philip: "rich chocolate and mocha aromas, meat and red fruit, a BIG wine, enduring mouth feel and salt, forest floor aromas, dry but velvety tannins".

Oldenburg wine-and-food-pairings

Even though our wines are great to enjoy on their own, we feel that they really come to life when paired with the right kinds of food. We asked renowned South African chef Craig Cormack to pair our wines with some delectable dishes. Today we will focus on the Chenin Blanc:

  1. Seafood broth with cocotte potatoes & saffron
  2. Calamari curry, coconut rice & coriander
  3. Smoked chicken, butternut puree & baby salad leaves
  4. Onion tart tartin, roasted peppers, goats cheese, baby salad leaves & parmesan shavings
  5. Avocado ritz

Besides the above, the Chenin Blanc also works very well with all Asian / Thai inspired cuisine and its accompanying flavours.

Please keep in mind that some of the comments may sound strange because most of the wines are still murky and unsettled. It’s difficult to assess wines properly in the immediate post-fermentation phase.

Oldenburg Vineyards experienced an ideal winter in 2014 followed by a relatively warm August. This meant that the vineyards were quick out of the blocks which heralded an early season.

After this initial spurt the vineyards slowed down and developed at a regular pace.
