Philip Costandius learnt his love for wine in a home where food and wine played an integral part of daily life. The rich experience of dishes and their preparation coupled with the enjoyment of wine led to a love of aroma, flavour and everything sensual.

This led Philip to completing a BSc degree in Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University and his entry into the South African wine Industry. Starting at Delheim Wines he worked his way over a period of 30 years, through the industry, making wine at places like Neethlingshof Estate and Lourensford Winery. He also started his own company called Solo Wines and apart from making his own wine also consulted a number of producers, amongst them Oldenburg Vineyards.

Philip has been a member of the illustrious Cape Wine Makers Guild and not only served as Chairman but also founded the Protégé Program, an initiative which funds and mentors disadvantaged winemakers in training. In his winemaking career Philip has garnered many accolades the most prestigious being three Top Ten Pinotage awards, various trophies and double gold medals.

Philip’s winemaking philosophy rests on fundamentals. There is soil, there is climate and then there is the vine. This combination is unique for every vineyard site in the world and the man who ventures into this site must take heed of these fundamentals if he is to make great wine. The prime reason for Philip’s presence at Oldenburg is his past experience as consultant at Oldenburg. At the time he saw the intrinsic characteristics and quality of the grapes and now even more he believes that Oldenburg is a great place to make outstanding wine.
